Program Note

The title of this work comes from John Milton’s epic poem ‘Paradise Lost.’

They looking back, all the eastern side beheld,
Of Paradise, so late their happy seat,”

The music is through-composed, with the opening material of each new section
emerging from the ending of the previous one, as in a game of dominoes.
1 Anguished—Larghetto—Tempo ritenuto
2 Larghetto
3 Tempo ritenuto
4 Vivace
5 Grave
6 Lento— Con moto
7 Andante
The piece is performed however in one continuous movement—as written—without any breaks between sections.
