Program Note
The three movements of this work make use of similar material to create different moods. The first movement is predominantly lyrical in character, the second reflective. The third movement expresses uncertainty through rhythmic imbalance. In the outer movements, there is a feeling of being unable to break free, as the music keeps turning back on itself. Dissonant elements create discomfort. The tone is alternately vehement, prayerful and sad. The central movement is notated without bar lines and comes with an instruction for the performers to listen to each other and interact together freely in performance.
