On June 10, 2021, in the Wilbur D. May Arboretum at Rancho San Rafael in Reno, Nevada, performing members of reNEW Music presented the World Premiere performances of several recently-composed short works by Monica Houghton during their wildly successful outdoor Musical Sculpture Garden event. More than 350 people, including many families with children, came out to enjoy the music and to chat with the performers and composers on a beautiful evening. Of the Houghton works, one was a short work for violin and viola entitled Motet Mashup, and three others were for solo instruments: Celebration (Abstraction) for horn, For the Lost Ones and Those Who Tried to Save Them for trombone, and Anthrophobia for cello. Each of the solo works was composed in direct response to some specific aspect of lived experience during the COVID-19 pandemic.
